Memories of Easter are often evoked by the sight and smell of this sugary sweet confection. The neon chicks and bunnies make for not only a visually pleasing experience but a delectable one too. The initial bite causes the outer layer to crisp and crackle. The second bite puts the pillowy soft marshmallow interior center stage. Eating a peep is the ultimate sensory experience.

Now, I know you are wondering how these cute lil mallows are made. While Peeps are made with only four ingredients, it still takes time for these treats to reach the shelves of local grocery stores nationwide. Peeps are made in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, at the Just Born factory. Just Born manufactures some of the most iconic candy, including Mike and Ike’s and Hot Tamales.

What are the ingredients? Well, I am glad you asked! The ingredients are corn syrup, sugar, gelatin, and air. The first part of the process combines the four ingredients in a drum. Then the mixture is heated and whipped into a fluffy marshmallow-y texture. Next, the mixture is extruded onto the production belt, where the fluffy mixture is pumped out into the classic chick shape. Then comes the sugar shower, where the plain chicks are coated with one of the many sugar colors. The most popular sugar colors respectively are yellow, pink, and blue. After the sugar shower is complete, the peeps are sent to another conveyor belt, where the signature facial features are added to the marshmallows. A unique sensor ensures the eyes are placed perfectly on the candy. Lastly, the Peeps are inspected, and the ones that do not make the cut are taken away from the production line. The ones that make it through are packaged in boxes, wrapped in cellophane, and ready to fill Easter baskets.

Or dare I say Christmas stockings? While Peeps are thought of as an Easter treat, they are also made for other holidays, including Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day.

With various shapes, colors, and flavors, Peeps have stood the test of time. New flavors for this year were just released! Those new marshmallow flavors include Donut Shop Coffee Chicks, Tropical Burst Chicks, Donut Shop Coffee Caramel Mocha Filled Chicks, Strawberry Chicks Dipped in Milk Chocolate, Sparkly Wild Berry Bunnies, and a Cotton Candy chick pop. I hope you all have a hoppy Easter, and I wish you peeps and happiness!
