Looking for family-friendly mystery/crime movies? I’ve got you covered. It increasingly gets harder to find good movies for the entire family to watch, especially when it comes to mysteries. I have grown up with old movies and shows and I compiled a list of some of the old mystery/crime movies we have watched and still love to rewatch. These are family-friendly but most of them may not interest little children.

Sherlock Holmes movie collection (from the 1940’s) // Starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson.

These movies are a great watch and are appropriate for the entire family as well. These movies take you through the cases that Sherlock Holmes solves with Dr. Watson. These are based on the Sherlock Holmes books written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. These are perfect for anyone who loves mystery as well. Also, four of these movies were colorized and you can find them for free on Amazon Prime Video.

Charlie Chan movies (1939-1946) // Starring Sidney Toler as Charlie Chan.

This 21 movie collection is another great watch for anyone who enjoys a good mystery. These are great for a family movie night as well! These mystery/thriller movies take you through tough murder cases that Charlie, a well-known and respected man, and most of the time, Jimmy Chan, his no. 2 son, as he calls him, must solve.

Thin Man movies (1934-1947) // Starring William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles

These movies are always a good choice for a mystery with a couple of laughs. In this 6 movie collection you get to watch the husband and wife detective team, Nick and Nora Charles, solve the different murders that seem to come up wherever they are.

The Saint movie collection (1939-1941) // Starring George Sanders as Simon Templar (aka the saint)

These 5 movies are based on some of the books in the collection of the British author Leslie Charteris’ long-running series about the fictional character Simon Templar, also known as The Saint.

The Falcon movie collection (1941-1946) // Starring George Sanders as the Falcon in the first four movies and Tom Conway as the Falcon in the last nine movies.

This 13 movie collection is very similar to the “The Saint” movies. In fact, the actor who plays Simon Templar, plays the Falcon in the first few movies. It then gets passed on to his actual brother and movie brother, Tom Conway. Both of these sets of films are extremely interesting and fun to watch.

Nancy Drew movie collection (1938-1939) // Starring Bonita Granville as Nancy Drew.

This 4 movie collection follows the mysteries that Nancy runs into on a day-to-day basis. The mysteries are incorporated into her daily life. The younger ones may even be interested in these as well.

The Applegate Mysteries (1956) // Starring Tim Considine and Tommy Kirk as Frank and Joe Hardy.

This is a series but it’s based off of the Hardy Boys. We have Nancy Drew above so of course we have to add in the Hardy Boys here. This series is based on “The Tower Treasure” Hardy Boys book. It’s a fun watch and it’s something for the boys in your family to enjoy as well.

Home Sweet Homicide (1946) // Starring Randolph Scott as Lt. Bill Smith and Peggy Ann Garner, Connie Marshall and Dean Stockwell as Dinah, April and Archie (the siblings)

If you’re looking for more of a lighthearted mystery, this is it. Three siblings work together to solve a murder before the police so that they can credit it to their mystery writer mother.

Brother Orchid (1940) // Starring Edward G. Robinson as John Sarto (Brother Orchid)

A mob boss is in major trouble and seeks refuge in a nearby monastery. As he is living upon the monks he realizes the errors of his past.

That Darn Cat! (1965) // Starring Hayley Mills as Patti Randall

This comedy/crime movie will not disappoint when looking for a crime movie with a fair amount of laughs. This movie might even be one that the littles will watch.

I hope you guys enjoy these! Let me know in the comments if you watch any of these!
