Welcome to the newest installment of This Day in History! This is a historical day for any of our readers interested in typing. On October 21, in 1918, renowned typist Margaret B. Owen wrote 170 words correctly on a manual typewriter in one minute, breaking the then current typing record.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, in 1946 Stella Pajunas-Garnand typed 216 words a minute on an electric typewriter, but Ms. Owens still holds the record for the most words per minute on a manual typewriter.

Fun Fact You (Probably) Didn’t Know: Margaret Owen wrote a book on typing called The Secret of Typewriting Speed, which is available to buy online.
